マイケルの母、大出費の可能性

（要旨）マイケル・ジャクソンの母キャサリン・ジャクソンと彼の3人の子供たちは先日、マイケル・ジャクソンの名前とイメージで利益を得ることを目的としたいくつかの商取引の契約を結んだ。しかしながら、彼女は、その取引でいくら儲けても、出費する状況になっている。

TMZが報じている通り、ミセス・ジャクソンはセゲイ・タイムズ(世界日報)という韓国の新聞社に多額の負債を負っている。伝えられるところによると、同新聞社は、キャサリン、ジョー、ジャーメインに対し、キャンセルとなったジャクソン・ファミリー・コンサートシリーズのために550万ドル（約4.8億円）を前払いしていた。1994年、同新聞社は訴訟を起こし、400万ドル（約3.5億円）の示談金を勝ち取ったが、未払いのままとなっている。累積利子により、その示談金は今や1300万ドル（約11.4億円）に膨れ上がっている。セゲイ・タイムズはすでにマイケル・ジャクソン・エステートに対して債権者請求を申請しており、キャサリンに支払うべき金からその負債を返済する命令がエステートに下されることを期待している。

一方で、ミセス・ジャクソンと新しいビジネスパートナーのハワード・マン(過去にオンラインギャンブルとアダルトサイトで儲けた人物）は、大型本「Never Can Say Goodbye」を製作した。そして伝えられるところによると、彼らは、数百時間に及ぶキャサリン所有のホームムービーからマイケル・ジャクソンの生涯を描いた映画を製作することになっているという。またマンは、彼の所有となった273曲のマイケル・ジャクソンの未発表曲からのアルバム製作について話をしている。

彼らの計画は、キング・オブ・ポップの名前とイメージについての独占権を有しているエステートの利権と正面から衝突することになる。しかしながら、マンは自身の法的立場を妥当なものとみなしている。なぜなら、ミセス・ジャクソンはこのプロジェクトにおいて彼と共同しており、さらに彼女とマイケルの子供たちはエステートからの受益者だからである。

(2-7-2010) Katherine Jackson, Michael's mother and guardian of his three children, has recently entered into several business deals aimed at making money off her son's name and image. However, she stands to loose whatever money she earns from the deals.

As reported earlier by TMZ, Mrs. Jackson owes a large sum of money to a South Korean newspaper called Segye Times. Reportedly, the newspaper advanced Katherine, Joe and Jermaine $5.5 million for a Jackson Family concert series that never happened. In 1994, the newspaper sued and won a $4 million settlement that remains unpaid. With accumulating interest the settlement has now grown to $13 million. Segye Times has filed a creditor's claim with Michael Jackson's estate hoping that a judge in the case will order the estate to pay off Katherine's debt from the estate money due to her.

Meanwhile, Mrs. Jackson and her new business partner, Howard Mann - who in the past has made his money with online gambling and erotica - have recently produced a coffee table book titled, "Never Can Say Goodbye," and are now reportedly set to produce films about Michael Jackson's life from hundreds of hours of Katherine's home movies. Mann has also talked about producing albums from 273 unreleased Michael Jackson songs that have come into his possession.

Their plans are in direct conflict with the interests of the estate which owns the exclusive rights to market the King of Pop's name and image. However, Mann considers his legal position sound because Mrs. Jackson is collaborating with him on the project and she, along with Michael's children, are the beneficiaries of the estate.

The tricky part is that Katherine is being paid a monthly allowance from Michael Jackson's estate based on her needs as assessed by the court. If those needs should disappear due to all of her business deals, the judge may well terminate that allowance.
