（要旨）「Hold My Hand」のビデオが今日デビューしたが、MTVはアーカイブから2009年8月のあるインタビューを取り上げている。その中ではエイコンが、マイケル・ジャクソンと最初に会った日のことを語っている。

「僕たちが実際に会った日が、僕の好きな思い出さ。だって僕は彼があんなにクールだとは思ってなかったんだ」とエイコンは語っている。「付き合いにくくて、無口で、他人を介してメッセージを送るわがままな奴、彼のことをそんな風に思ってたんだ。わかるよね？みんなが聞いてるようないろいろな噂話を聞いてたから」

だがすぐにエイコンは、彼が想像するようなわがままな男ではないことに気付いた。

「彼に会おうと階段を上りドアをノックする。ボディーガードがドアを開けて言う。『OK、彼はあなたを待っています』。僕は入る。そしてマイケルは回転する椅子にかけている。だけど向うを向いている。で、部屋を歩いていく。だけど彼は背を向けたまま。ボディーガードが『マイク、エイコンが来ました」と言う。それで彼は椅子を回転させてこちらを向く、すべてが振付されているようだった・・・・僕は思わずこんな感じだったよ、『すげえな！』ってね」

「だけどこちらを向くとすぐに立ち上がって、『やあ、どうだい？』、『やあ、マイク』。そして彼は僕の背中をバンバン叩き、僕らはハグしたんだ」。彼は続ける。「彼はこんな風に言った。『君に会うのをずっと待ってたんだ。光栄だよ。来てくれてありがとう、時間を作ってくれてありがとう』。僕は心の中で思ったよ、『こっちこそ時間を作ってくれてありがとうだよ』ってさ」

エイコンによれば、ジャクソンとの仕事での思い出で一番のお気に入りはこの最初の出会いで、先入観が消え去り、マイケルの人柄を知った時だという。

「すごいことだったんだよね、だって僕らは一緒に腰掛けて、アフリカの事を語り、僕の生い立ちのことを語り、音楽のことを語り、女の子のことを語ったんだ。あの日は素晴らしい、信じられない時間を過ごしたんだよ」と彼は言う。「彼はとんでもなくファニーだったよ。ジョークも言うし、楽しむことが好きだったんだ」 - 以下原文。

■ Akon Reminisces About Meeting MJ
(9-12-2010) With the debut of the 'Hold My Hand' video today, MTV went into their archives and pulled out an interview from August 2009 during which Akon spoke about the day he first met Michael Jackson.

"My favorite moment was the day we actually met, because I didn't expect him to be that cool," Akon said. "I expected him to be this diva — just hard to deal with, rarely speaks, got to send his message through someone else, you know? Because these are the stories you hear."

But Akon soon discovered Jackson was far from the Diva he expected.

"So I'm going upstairs [to meet him], I knock on the door, his bodyguard opens and says, 'OK, he's waiting to meet you.' I walk in, and [Michael's] in this spinning chair, but it's facing backwards," he said. "So I walk in the room, but his back is turned, and the guard says, 'Hey, Mike, Akon's here.' So he spins around, like it was all choreographed — so, off the top, I'm like, 'Oh boy!'

"But as soon as he turns around, gets up, 'Yo, what up, man?!' and I was like, 'What up, Mike?' and he gave me a pound, we hugged each other," he continued. "He's like, 'Yo, I've been waiting to meet you for so long, this is a great honor, thanks for showing up, thanks for making the time.' And in my mind I'm like, 'You know, I should be thanking you for making the time.' "

Akon says his fondest memory of working with Jackson is that initial meeting when all of his preconcieved notions melted away and he got to know Michael the person.

"It was the craziest thing, because we sat down, we talked about Africa, we talked about my foundation, we talked about the music, we talked about girls. We had a great, incredible time that day," he said. "He was extremely funny, he told jokes, and he liked to have fun."
